Job Title: Director of Development

Reporting to: Executive Director

Family Equality Council is the only national non-profit exclusively dedicated to securing equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender parents and their children.  Founded in 1979, Family Equality Council works to eliminate prejudice, violence and injustice against LGBT families at the local, state and national levels. Due to the organization’s exciting growth it is seeking a dynamic and successful development professional.  Together with the Executive Director, the Development Director will be responsible for overseeing the strategy and implementation of all national fundraising efforts.  S/he will help forge new relationships to increase FEC’s visibility, impact, and financial strength. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated passion for the mission, and a proven track record of success in major gift solicitation, foundation grants and corporate sponsorships. The Development Director will be responsible for raising an initial annual budget of approximately $2.5 million. The budget is expected to double within five years. The Family Equality Council’s operations are based in Boston .  There is an opportunity for this to be a telecommuting position from New York, Los Angeles or Dallas.  Frequent national travel is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Executive Director and Board Members on all major fundraising initiatives
  • Actively team with the Executive Director to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include major donors, events, corporate, foundation grants, grassroots appeals and more
  • Develop, submit and steward proposals for foundation grants with a long-term relationship-management approach
  • Develop strong direct mail campaign to build membership base
  • Leverage and grow existing major events calendar
  • In partnership with outside communications consultants, develop communications strategies to engage and inform donors and members
  • Oversee research on funding sources and trends, so as to position FEC ahead of major funding changes
  • Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis as needed
  • Develop and implement a stewardship program to cultivate deeper ties with donors
  • Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program
  • Develop, manage and mentor the development team

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be a team player and a demonstrated self-starter who enjoys working in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.  S/he will be able to speak passionately about the mission of the Family Equality Council and make a compelling and articulate value proposition to potential donors.  Additional qualifications include:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in fundraising and/or relationship management in a political, policy, activism or advocacy setting
  • Experience in raising $5+ million annually through events, major gifts, and foundations
  • Ability to operate in an entrepreneurial, resource-limited environment, with experience in establishing roles and responsibilities, and implementing processes and systems
  • Demonstrated success at cultivating, soliciting and securing major gifts from the $25,000 to $250,000 level
  • Proven success in leveraging major events
  • Maturity to work with highly visible civic, philanthropic, and business leaders
  • Results-driven; excellent time and project management skills.
  • Strong team orientation, ability to provide and accept feedback, and ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, excellent oral presentation and written skills
  • Ability to travel 25% of the time

Job Title: Program & Education Associate

Reporting to: Director of Policy & Programs

Family Equality Council is the national non-profit exclusively dedicated to securing equality for all loving families, specifically lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer parents and their children.  Founded in 1979, Family Equality Council works to eliminate prejudice, violence and injustice against LGBTQ families at the local, state and national levels. Through advocacy, education and support we help LGBTQ families tell their stories and work to educate the American public about the realities of LGBTQ family life.

Roles & Responsibilities:   

The Program and Education Associate (P& E Associate) will be an integral team member within the organization on all program and education issues.  This individual will work in close partnership with the Program Director to ensure the successful execution of a multi-pronged programmatic agenda.  The P & E Associate will work in all aspects of Family Equality Council’s advocacy and education programming, including Family Equality Council’s national speakers bureau - OUTSpoken Families, the programming for youth aged 3-8 years old, the Research Symposium in 2010, parent groups support and cultivation and various events and conferences throughout the year. 

The P&E Associate will help manage programs and education, communications and some administrative functions. 

Responsibilities:

  • The P&E Associate is responsible for providing support services as assigned for all of Family Equality Council’s undertakings, including events, inquiries, resource requests, material updates, member communications and other special projects.
  • The range of tasks is varied and must be completed in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Provide support to all programs, conferences, community forums and outreach functions;
  • Create curriculum appropriate for the targeted age group;
  • Work directly with children to implement curricula;
  • Work closely with the Policy and Program Director to develop evaluation and data collection for all programs;
  • Create and maintain work plans that move projects forward;
  • Strategically manage program and initiative data and provide period reports;
  • Perform administrative duties as needed;
  • Coordinate telephone and email requests for resources.

Minimum Qualifications:

All candidates should work well in a fast-paced environment with multiple tasks, be energetic, hard-working and committed to equality for LGBTQ-headed families.  Other qualifications include:

  • Attention to detail, creativity, strong interpersonal skills and teamwork a must;
  • Work with children especially ages three – seven, understand where they are developmentally and program appropriately;
  • Be professional and courteous in working with LGBTQ parents and their families;
  • Take responsibility for solving problems and overcoming obstacles encounters in completing assigned tasks on deadline;
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize appropriately;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary;
  • Willing to travel;
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred;
  • Ability to collaborate on projects with staff from other departments, and have a high level of personal investment in creating an organized, streamlined, high-functioning office environment and in contributing to the work of organization as a whole.
