Appointment of Neil Gorsuch to Supreme Court Represents Threat to LGBTQ Families

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Today’s Senate vote to confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch’s appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court represents a serious threat to progress toward lived and legal equality for LGBTQ families. Since the nomination was announced in December by President Trump, Family Equality Council has joined numerous organizations in demonstrating how Gorsuch’s views on civil rights issues are fundamentally at odds with the notion that LGBT people are entitled to equality, liberty, justice and dignity under the law.

In response to the confirmation vote today, CEO Stan Sloan stated: “Family Equality Council opposed the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, and we are disappointed that this confirmation is now a reality. We hope that our fears concerning his ability to assure fair treatment of LGBTQ individuals and families – and members of all marginalized communities – will now be proven wrong, and that Justice Gorsuch rises to support and protect the civil liberties of all Americans.”
