Council is pleased to announce the hiring of Emily Hecht as Senior
Legislative Counsel. Emily will be based in Family Equality
Council’s new Washington, DC office, where she will work to
advance Family Equality Council’s priorities within federal
agencies and in Congress on issues including health care, adoption
and foster care, safe schools, immigration, DOMA repeal, workplace
benefits and a transgender-inclusive ENDA.

Emily join Family Equality Council,” said Jennifer Chrisler,
Executive Director of Family Equality Council. “Emily has
substantial experience in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
(LGBT) policy, particularly LGBT family policy. Her launch of our
DC office will take Family Equality Council’s federal advocacy
program to the next level, enabling us to redouble our efforts to
seize the political opportunities offered by the current
Administration and Congress.”
Emily Hecht comes to Family
Equality Council from Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN),
where she served as the Co-Director for Law for the past three
years. In that position, she directed the legal services program,
which provided assistance to people in the military impacted by
Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and related forms of
discrimination.
“I am very excited to join
Family Equality Council at a time when our nation’s President
emphasizes valuing all families, rather than the “family
values” rhetoric of the past decade,” said Emily Hecht.
“Family Equality Council and its supporters lead the nation in
defeating anti-LGBT family legislation and advancing laws and
policies that support our community. I am thrilled to take on
advancing the historic reforms that constitute Family Equality
Council’s federal family-inclusive policy agenda.”
Prior to her work with SLDN,
Emily served as the Assistant Section Director of the Section of
Individual Rights and Responsibilities at the American Bar
Association, where she managed a variety of legislative and policy
initiatives encompassing a broad range of civil rights issues. She
is a graduate of American University and the Catholic University of
America, Columbus School of Law. Emily will begin her
responsibilities at Family Equality Council on November 9,
2009.
