Hmmm? Definitely food for thought. But, the book and article (I haven’t read the book) tend to focus a lot on the “parent”. What about the kid? What about his/her needs?

This book seems to cry out “me, me, me, me, me”. But, if you’ve made the life changing decision to have a child, then you’re mentality should shift to “them, them, them, them”.

It’s called self sacrifice. Now you have to do what’s in the best interest of the child. Not yourself, per se.

Don’t get me wrong. You don’t have to be a stay at home parent until the kid(s) goes off to college. Just the crucial years of early development. Where it’s needed most.

Luis: I don’t disagree with you… but the author of the book argues that being financially independent (from one’s partner) is in the best interest of the child and therefore it’s a choice that’s not all about me, me, me. The tricky part seems to be balancing the short term and long term needs of each individual in the family. Thanks for your thoughts.

I guess a lot of it depends on how much wealth you feel you “need” and how you balance that against the time and care you want to take with your child. I work with a woman who works ridiculous round the clock hours and has a young son with another on the way… Though she thrives on stress (totally Type A) and they have a nice home and plenty of luxuries because of the extra income, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that her kid is suffering for lack of attention and already is somber and self-reliant beyond his years.

Like anything else, I guess it’s a case-by-case thing. Personally, I’m just not going to have any. =/
