a child in Decatur, Georiga. Once a small town on the outskirts of
Atlanta, Decatur is now a bustling suburb of the Southeast’s
premier metropolitan area. Still, it is the South, and as a native
Georgian myself I know too well the kinds of obstacles LGBT people
can face there.
But in the 21st century, it’s not always doom and gloom.
Ken Manford
and Jeffrey Roach moved to Decatur after spending years in
Dallas and New York. Their son is now in first grade a their local
elementary school. Ken and Jeffrey recently donated a diversity
book pack from Two Lives Publishing to their school, to the
attention of the principal, in honor of the first grade teachers.

Ken and Jeffrey weren’t sure what kind of response to expect from
the school. They were astounded when Jackson’s teacher sent the
following note home:

members in Decatur, Georgia who will benefit from learning about
difference and acceptance through these books.
We can all take chances, each and every day, in our own ways–be
they “big” or “small”.

contributing to the learning environment in her school. Now
that’s some change you can believe in.
