We submitted comments, co-signed by a number of national partners, to the Department of Veterans Affairs, urging them to interpret the definition of "immediate family" to insure that all eligible family members, including those without a legal or biological relationship, could qualify for readjustment counseling when a veteran or servicemember returned from service.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION STRATEGIC PLAN

We submitted comments, as Family Equality Council and as part of the National Safe Schools Partnership, to the Department of Education after they released their 2011-2014 strategic plan with no mention of LGBT students. As a direct result of our letters, “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” are now included in every enumerated list within the Equity section of the plan, making it fully inclusive of the LGBT community.

CUSTOMS AND BORDER CONTROL
