Parents groups are both formal and informal community-based groups who organize social, educational and advocacy-based activities for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) parents, families and those considering parenthood. Some groups are quite large and even organize bigger events like conferences, workshops, newsletters and websites. Most parent groups are smaller groups that meet monthly or periodically for moresocial and community-building activities like potlucks or play dates. Most parents groups are volunteer-run and share a commitment to connect and strengthen families with LGBT parents.
The Family Equality Council will help you start an LGBT parent group in your area. We will also support you throughout your work with LGBT parents and share our national resources. If you want to start a parent group or have questions about what the process entails, contact Andra Oshinsky, Programs Associate, at andra@familyequality.org. We are eager to lead you through the process of starting a successful parent group.
Additionally, we’ve created this step-by-step guide is designed to help new groups with defining goals and objectives and provide existing groups with fresh insight and new ideas!
Finally, once your Parent Group is ready to go, don’t forget to submit your parent group on our website so other parents can find it on our parent group map.
