Parents groups are both formal and informal community-based groups who organize social, educational and advocacy-based activities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) parents, families and those considering parenthood.

Some groups are quite large and organize large-scale events such as conferences, workshops, newsletters and websites. Most Parent Groups are smaller groups that meet monthly or quarterly for more social and community-building activities such as potlucks or play dates. Parent groups are volunteer-run and share a commitment to connect and strengthen families with LGBTQ parents.

With your commitment to starting a Parent Group, Family Equality Council® will serve as a resource to networking and providing resources in your area. We will also support you throughout your work with LGBTQ parents and share our national resources. If you want to start a Parent Group or have questions about what the process entails, contact your regional Programmatic staffer, listed by region on the sidebar. We are eager to lead you through the process of starting a successful parent group.

Additionally, we’ve created this step-by-step guide, designed to help new groups with defining goals and objectives and provide existing groups with fresh insight and new ideas!

Once your Parent Group is ready to go, don’t forget to submit your parent group on our website so other parents can find it on our Parent Group map.

Finally, be sure to join and share your Facebook Group URL on our Family Equality Council Parent Groups Facebook Group to help spread the word!
