Family Equality Council Statement on 6th Circuit Ruling Against Marriage Equality

Washington DC- Family Equality Council strongly denounced today’s ruling by the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, which overturned lower court marriage equality rulings in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee.

Statement from Executive Director Gabriel Blau

“Today’s decision by the 6th Circuit hurts the thousands of LGBTQ families that we serve in the states affected. In all of these cases, Family Equality Council, through our ‘Voices of Children’ briefs, shared stories of both the concrete and dignitary harms that children face when their parents are denied the right to marry. This ruling turns a blind eye to those concerns and creates continued obstacles for families living in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee who are simply trying to take care of and protect one another. It also flies in the face of a slew of other recent circuit court rulings where fairness and equality prevailed.

While this is a setback, we are confident that we will ultimately prevail. In the meantime, we will continue to educate the American people about our families and push for both legal and lived equality in all 50 states.”
