Boston, MA – Family Equality Council applauds Congressman Jerrold
Nadler and his introduction of the Housing Opportunities Made Equal
(HOME) Act. The HOME Act makes long-needed updates to the Fair
Housing Act that will improve access to housing choices for
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families.

“During this time of great economic difficulty, it is imperative
that all LGBT families have access to safe affordable housing,
guaranteeing their security, economic stability and well-being,”
said Jennifer Chrisler, Executive Director of Family Equality
Council (FEC). “Passage of the HOME Act will go a long way in
protecting the approximately 1 million lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgender (LGBT) parents in the United States raising
approximately 2 million children.”

A majority of LGBT headed families live in states with no
anti-discrimination protections. These families are exceptionally
vulnerable to being denied housing simply because a member of their
household identifies as LGBT. The HOME Act makes necessary updates
to the Fair Housing Act to ensure all families have access to safe
affordable housing where and when they need it.
