Family Equality Council to Honor Katie Couric at Night at the Pier Gala in New York City

Family Equality Council’s annual Night at the Pier gala celebrates LGBTQ families and honors those who have made a significant impact in the fight for equality. This year’s gala will take place on May 7 at Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers, in New York City. This year, Family Equality Council is thrilled to honor Katie Couric – award-winning journalist, best-selling author, and documentary filmmaker – for her impactful work to elevate LGBTQ visibility, especially marginalized voices within the LGBTQ community. The award will be presented by the Ford family, who Katie met during the creation of Gender Revolution.

In 2017, Couric partnered with National Geographic to executive produce and narrate Gender Revolution: A Journey with Katie Couric, a documentary exploring issues of gender identity and expression. Through the power of empathetic storytelling, transgender and gender expansive youth and adults shared their stories with a nation only just beginning to see representation of non-cisgender folks in the mainstream.

In the film, Couric positions herself as a student who knows she may not get everything right – but who seeks out honest conversations from a place of love and empathy.
