Jim Obergefell is the Director of Special Events, coordinating Family Equality’s annual galas and fundraising events. As the named plaintiff in Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court marriage equality decision, Jim embraced a new career in LGBTQ+ and civil rights activism following years in high school teaching, software education consulting, relationship management, and corporate training. A speaker, published author, and writer, Jim also co-founded the wine label Equality Vines to support organizations fighting for equality for all. Having helped bring the right to marry to all 50 states, Jim is thrilled to continue his advocacy for our families with Family Equality. An accidental—now purposeful—activist, Jim’s work is rooted in love for his late husband John Arthur.
Jim moved back to his hometown of Sandusky, OH in 2021 to be closer to family. In his spare time, Jim enjoys travel, photography, art museums, and spending time with family and friends.
