Tom Swan


Tom is the current Chair of the Board of Family Equality and previously was its Treasurer. He is committed to Family Equality’s mission to advance legal and lived equality for LGBTQ+ families and those who wish to form them.

Tom is married to Joe Townley. Joe and Tom have two sons and three daughters and were able to create their family through gestational surrogacies. Their children are Tom’s greatest pride & joy and have inspired his commitment to ensuring that we do everything possible to create a future where every LGBTQ+ person has the right and opportunity to form and sustain a loving family, regardless of who they are or where they live. Tom, Joe and their children live in Los Angeles and Cape Cod.

Tom is committed to supporting institutions and organizations that help to support families, education, mental health and the needs of disadvantaged children. In addition to serving on the Board of Family Equality, Tom is a member of the McLean National Council. McLean Hospital is the #1 ranked independent Psychiatric Hospital in the world and transforms the lives of people afflicted with psychiatric illnesses. He previously served on the Board of the Los Angeles Youth Network. Tom was a 25th Reunion Campaign co-chair for his Harvard College class and is currently serving as a class co-chair for his 30th Reunion Campaign. Tom is a long-standing Form Agent for St. Paul’s School.

In his professional life, Tom is the Co-CEO of The Swan Group which operates businesses in North America, Asia and Europe that manufacture and distribute heating, plumbing, well water and water treatment products that are sold in most parts of the world. Previously, Tom was an investment banker in San Francisco. He began his career practicing law. He graduated from Harvard College and Georgetown Law School.
