Family Equality Council Applauds Marriage Equality Decision in Virginia

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Virginia Ban on Marriage for Same-Sex Couples Ruled Unconstitutional

Washington, DC, February 13, 2014 -Family Equality Council, the national organization which connects, supports, and represents the three million parents who are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer in the United States and their six million children, tonight praised the historic decision by U.S. District Judge Arenda Wright Allen, who ruled the Virginia ban on marriage for same-sex couples unconstitutional.

“We’re elated that thousands of loving, committed, same-sex couples in Virginia are one step closer to gaining the vital protections they need to take care of their families,” said Executive Director, Gabriel Blau. “Following recent marriage victories in Utah, Oklahoma, Ohio, and Kentucky, this Virginia decision is yet another reminder that equality is making its way across this nation. Eventually, all families will be treated equally under the law. We congratulate the American Foundation for Equal Rights and all who worked tirelessly to make this happen and look forward to seeing this ruling upheld in the long run.”
