Hey Everyone — I just wanted to add that the Family Equality Council has been in touch with Ms. Gaffey and is assisting with her situation. We’ll keep you up to date as things develop. No child should be bullied or harassed in schools.

I’m glad she’s safer at her new school but why should she have had to transfer? And why should she be ashamed or afraid to talk about her parents?

There’s something wrong when the way a child is treated is dependent on the whim of a single administrator at a single school.

Ginny’s daughter was transferred to ensure her immediate safety. And she most definitely should not be ashamed to talk about her family. We’re working with the principals, superintendent and school committee members in order to make sure that the child stays safe and that something positive comes out of this for everyone. In this case it’s more likely a misunderstanding or misapprehension of how serious the problem is, versus outright bigotry and hatred on the part of the schools.

Again, we’ll keep everyone updated as things develop.

HI, it is awefull what some children have to endure at times, two out of my seven kids have had to deal with similar situations too. Honestly it’s not just the kids that need to be educated, but the parents too. If a parent is teaching their children to hate gay’s or lesbian’s that child doesn’t know any better. We had an incident of a parent telling her 10yr old that she could NO longer play with my 10yr old because I am gay, well for a year I drove her daughter’s to and from basketball, we had her daughter’s over, my kids went over there. I never hid my partner, we live together, parent together, but people thought we were sister’s, or they tried to convince themselve’s of that… I have asked our school counscelor to look into doing more because all they do is a diversity day in the Spring. I have yet to hear back from her, honestly she is ignorant about it too…
The reason I wanted to post is that I live in Plymouth, MA…not to far from Milton, if either mom’s from the article see this and would like to e-mail me, maybe our kids could meet, and have a support system, and the mom’s too? We are always looking for families like our’s, and there aren’t to many around here with kids…..our e-mail is cahillnine@hotmail.com We have a 12, 10, 8, 6, 4 and 3 yr old twins…..if anyone in the area is interested in meeting and having some kind of social gatherings or support meetings, I would love that..

Eileen, thanks for the very thoughtful comment. Ms. Gaffey and her daughter are actually coming into the office this afternoon, so I will share your words with her and give her your contact information. I also suggest that you check out our parents group listing, which catalogues the many groups for LGBTQ parents and their families around the country. There are many in Massachusetts — not sure which is closest or most appealing to you. You can see that list here: http://www.familyequality.org/action/parentsgroups.html.

Thanks again.
